A day with friends

This Monday was an exceptional day, because I had the chance to spend it with all three of my friends, although on separate intervals because these friends have little in common. In the morning, I met Amira for a private matter, and we had the chance to talk for about half an hour or so. Amira is the only one I can talk with about my ambitions and find a listening mind, because we shared those ambitions and still think about them. She's also one of the lucky few who had an equal share of happiness and sadness in their lives, not the monotonic satisfaction or depression, but true sadness and true happiness. I told her how I feel about the subject we were meeting to deal with, and I discovered that I lost faith in lots of good things in life. I preferred to find safety in avoidance than taking chances, because I took so many chances and they brought nothing but brief contentment and enduring pain. She's blissfully happy with her life, although she criticizes her performance in the practical field of her life, which was her ultimate ambition. But that shows you how some unexpected things can bring you ultimate happiness because they carry with them a beautiful sharing and companionship, even though we presume that our happiness is bound to our own mental image and plans.
In the afternoon I met Walaa, and I will admit that lately our meetings have grown more scarce, because of my unwillingness to come to Mansoura and the gloomy tone that took over our conversations. But this day she was on a moderate tone because she was bringing some excitement to her life again, and I told her what was new news for me, and we had a nice time talking about how stupid some people are. I was urging her to free herself of the restrictions her family imposed on her, not because I want her to be totally free, but because I find that placing such harsh restrictions on a woman who's beginning her thirties is ridiculous! She can't buy her own clothes for God's Sake! I seriously thought that was a major part of her unhappiness; the suffocating rules and norms she has to endure, and I told her so, but she has no rebellion in her guts. I pray that she has any sort of breakthrough in her life so that she can find the peace of mind she deserves.
I went home to find my friend Omneya calling me to tell me to come over, I was so tired and sleep-deprived, but I never wasted the chance to meet her because those were few chances due to her married life of domestic and social commitments. We spent the time playing with her two beautiful kids, and talking in between breaks. Sometimes our talks take a flat line because of her exhaustion and her kids' demands, but we always manage to talk about something deep. I can see a live example of marital and domestic life with all its pros and cons in front of me, and she manages to remind me that my situation isn't all that awful, and there are advantages to being free of social ties. I began to agree lately, because when I talked with mother once about something a man said to me in a marriage meeting "You seem to be a very strong woman!" She said: Why not? Men don't like strong women, and women should play it right and act the demure type men seem to prefer. I said: I will never act anything for a man, and I couldn't find a man who deserved toning down my strength. I don't want a man who's afraid of my strength, although I can call it more accurately "my passion about my convictions." I want a man who CAN conquer this strength with his confidence that it's a good thing. He then can depend on me if need call for it. She laughed at my stupidness, and I bet in her mind she said "You'll never find that!" But that conversation made me appreciate what my friend told me about my freedom and how it's precious now that I have it.

The pearl and the coffee pot

She went down the street, looking for a specific shop that was known for making pearls. When she finally found it, she went in there. It was a small shop, with its owner standing there with a welcoming smile. "What do you want?" He asked her, and she told him she wanted a white pearl; they told her he's the only one who can make a pearl for her. He said "But I'm out of pearls!" The answer made her frantic. "What should I do? How can get a pearl?" He said "I can tell you how to make one on your own, I will give you a pot of coffee, and when you get home, you just make a usual cup of coffee in that pot, and keep stirring, in time you'll find a whitish ball forming inside the pot, and that would be your pearl. Be careful though, because if you take the pearl out of the pot before it's time the pearl will dissipate into sugar! And be ware that this pot makes only one pearl!" So she took the pot with a pleased smile, and headed home to follow the recipe. She kept stirring the coffee in the pot, and gradually felt the formation of a ball inside the pot. She was so pleased with the results, but she wondered "When was the right time to take the pearl out without it turning into sugar?!" She forgot to ask about the one crucial step that would get her her pearl! She hesitated a little bit, then she shrugged and said to herself "I'll try my luck!" And with that thought she carefully took the ball with the teaspoon out of the pot for a quick peak. There it was, a whitish ball that sparkled in the light. She was so pleased with the result that she didn't care the ball wasn't a perfect sphere, and she kept taking the ball out of the pot and returning it back in. She had her pearl it seamed, though anyone looking from a distance would think "Sugar too can form itself into an imperfect sphere, and it too has a sparkle in the light!" They said no one knew for sure if that was indeed a pearl, but to her it was the most beautiful of pearls.

If only she could...

She wanted to expel him today from her morning coffee...
She wanted to drink her coffee without a face...
Maybe the taste won't be that bittersweet...
Maybe the newspaper won't be the undefined blur of a distant beautiful morning...
When that face brought the smile that hurt, but still tasted full of sunshine and breeze...
She wanted to miss the ache that wrenched her heart, but all the same made it flutter in waves of a beautiful love song...
She wanted to drink her morning coffee without the taste of him in her heart...
She wanted to not know the feeling of being alive...
She just wanted to drink a bland coffee, a bland life...
If only she could...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Her hands hugged the keypad and the pencil...
Hoping that maybe her heart would come out running...
Hoping that the pain can go away with her strokes...
But her hands kept hovering, and the pencil kept drawing a face with no eyes...
Her heart was so afraid that the feelings won't come out right...
Her heart was afraid that the sacred fire would be distinguished...
Her heart feared that a cheap match would take a glimpse of her tears...
But still, her hands kept holding the pencil, and the keypad...
Maybe the pain would go away and hide between the folds of her diary...
Until she calls it again, many years after, in hopes that it would seize to be...
But her hands just hovered in the air...
If only she could...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A tremble went down her heart...
That image didn't want to go away...
Those voices didn't want to dissipate...
The smallest things haunted her...
She was so solemn today, trying to chase away the dreams and the memories...
But every corner reminded her...
Every character on her TV reminded her...
Every name said and called reminded her...
Small labels of shining silver on her disk reminded her...
Written promises and sent wishes reminded her...
It was as if the story was written inside her eyes, so that whenever she looks she sees...
It was as if the story was engraved in her ears so that whenever she listens, she hears...
No, it wasn't just her heart that assailed her...
Every part of her held her sacred memories...
She shuts her eyes, holds her hands to her ears, squeezes her arms around her thoughts...
But then her heart keeps screaming: Let me breath...
For these memories are the blood that keeps me alive...
So she surrenders, puts her hands down, puts her arms down...
But she also puts her hopes down, and lets her tears down...
She lets her heart feed on her pain, so it breaks, but repairs itself again...
Because it wants to live for the memories over and over again...
If only she could...

Bad coincidence!

This Ramadan; my birth month, which coincided with August; also my birth month, was supposed to be a great coincidence and a great opportunity for me to set a new phase of my life. I turned thirty one; supposedly the first year of a great decade for any woman, because I believe the twenties is the decade when you're stupid and you don't "comprehend" and "acknowledge" what you're doing with your life. Only when thirty hits that you begin to be more mature and can take a distant look at yourself and your actions. I didn't mind the concept that thirties is the beginning of the end for a woman, because I was always someone who counted the years to her forties "I'm getting older sister! I'm twenty, and I have just twenty years left before I get forty!!!" And a lot of people thought this sentence was the most stupid thing they've ever heard. For me it was all time, there were no milestones to feel good about myself, because life sucked in general and with no time limit! I was never someone who wore rosy glasses and stared at the half full glass of water, for me it was always dark, and the glass had water! It wasn't the most impressive drink on the planet!
I don't know why on my thirty's birthday I thought things may get a bit interesting, maybe because of this whole new angle I can see myself with, and I totally bought the idea that a woman in her thirties is "a woman." She's not a girl anymore, she's not naive anymore, and that was totally true for me. The new angle I can see myself from is that now I can; I can be independent if I choose to, I can be more beautiful if I choose to, and I can do whatever the hell I want if I choose to. But then I thought back "But you always were all these possibilities! You always knew you weren't like the other girls who can't be!" But it's OK, the realization cam anyway, and I thought that this year, this August, this Ramadan, I'd be a whole new woman, and life would be a whole new space of colors and good events.
But sadly, I was hit by two people who are close to me, I was hit so hard my head is still spinning out of my control, and the day which was supposed to be a beautiful birthday and was laid with plans for celebration by the holy month and the birthday turned out to be the precursor to one of the worst months I've had in a long long time! It made me wonder, is it possible for the best decade of your life to start this bad?! Is it possible that the beautiful autumn season begins with a gloomy day?!
Well, we'll see next year same time as now!

It was beyond my control

It's amazing how people who are supposed to care for us bring us down with their cruelty! We can have nothing but good wishes and pure feelings for them, and yet they manage to twist all that in our faces and cut us deep with vicious words and even more vicious acts. The funny thing is; we can't hate them, we can't denounce them, we can't hurt them back, and we can't turn our backs to them and say "No more!" because we're bound by sacred bonds and vows.
I tried once to denounce a man I should have cared for; my father. Reasons for the rift don't matter; it's enough for me I know in my heart I couldn't have forced myself to do better and I had excuses. The problem was I had divine instructions that I shouldn't alienate myself from him, and as God is my witness, I tried! I talked to myself in my loneliness, I talked to myself on my diary, and I talked to God and asked him to forgive my total and utter inability to be good to my father. My father, without intending to, made me love things that I now take pride for loving, but he also made me hate life with him, and hate myself for my deep differences with him. Parents shouldn't be hated like that, parents shouldn't bring such aggressive feeling from their kids, yet my father did.
I punished myself over and over after his death, I tried to redeem my actions by being overly good to my mother, and yet I kept feeling that nothing will wash away the bad things we did and said to each other. This has been going on for seven long years; with no day passing by without me thinking this whole thing thoroughly in my heart and mind. Only this year I began to think about this more calmly after my old diaries resurfaced. I wrote about days that were especially bad, and I wrote about the day he died. I could have included both sorts of entries here to illuminate the acute and different feelings I had in both situations, but it would have been too severe, because even I who wrote these things couldn't stand it. The conclusion of my thoughts was this: If he was still alive I would have toned down my reactions, but things would still be bad, because the problem was with his performance as a father, not with differences that we can see among all families; differences that go away with reason. Maybe I was young and didn't understand the gravity of my furious reactions, but his actions were inexcusable under any circumstances. The bottom line for me was I can now say "Please God forgive me, but you knew what was going on, and you knew I tried hard to be what you asked me to be, but his actions were beyond my control."
